Peking to Paris
Co-Driver: Dan Rensing
Dan Rensing is the “senior” member of the Car 34 entry. A semi-retired professional land surveyor, married, father of two, Dan is participating in his first ever road rally with the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge. With the exception of the engine re-build, he has performed all the prep work on the car. When asked early on how the preparations were going, his reply was “I know more about this car now than I ever wanted to know!” His interest in cars and things mechanical go back to childhood. “I remember taking an electric motor apart with my brother. We put it back together, but had parts left over. Needless to say, it didn’t run.” Things have improved with age though. He has rebuilt several automotive engines (VW and International Harvester), and now does all the maintenance on the family vehicles. The rebuild of the rally car’s motor was left to a professional because of the babbitted bearings. “I don’t have the line boring equipment to do the job properly.”His background in surveying will come in handy navigating the wilds of Mongolia. “GPS navigation and positioning is one of the tools we commonly use now in surveying.” Dan spent a summer touring the US on an old Honda 305 Super Hawk, has whitewater rafted in West Virginia (Upper Gauley), and regularly takes backpack trips to the Red River Gorge geological area in central Kentucky. “I’m really looking forward to this rally. What a drive this will be, the adventure of lifetime, for certain!”
